What Boxer calls a simple pursuit of truth has had observers craning their necks on Capitol Hill. News World Report this week said Boxer's "whupping of Secretary of State designee Condi Rice last week has progressives calling the Californian the go to politician for the big battles coming down the pike on abortion, the Supreme Court and civil rights."
They feel comfortable agreeing about 90 percent of the time and amiably differing the rest, she said, and "that's a strength. We're not sent there by the people of California to be clones of each other, to be joined at the hip."
and her electoral security, has fewer bridges to burn and so is emerging as the Democrats' verbal pugilist, letting caucus leadership avoid some of the fray and keep a more moderate, diplomatic relationship with its colleagues across the aisle and with the White House.
"I've always been this way. Everyone who knows me knows I stand up for what I think is right," she said, adding the recent flap with Rice was partly"happenstance" if she weren't a Senate Foreign Relations Committee member, she Tommy Hilfiger Jacket Vintage
"That wasn't fun, to stand alone, but it had to be done," she said. "You can't turn away from the truth and hold up your oath of office."
Boxer welcomes role as Dem pugilist
And Time magazine cited her "surprisingly tough remarks at Rice's confirmation hearing" while posing the question: "Is she the Democrats' new attack dog?"
The Republican National Committee put out several anti Boxer pieces in the past week. One, entitled "Dems vs. Dems," highlighted Sen. Dianne Feinstein's support of Rice. The GOP has tried to depict a rift between California's Senators "for years," Boxer said, but "they don't understand our relationship, which is very strong."
Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, a centrist, is trying to have Senate Democrats speak with a unified voice. Yet it seems Boxer, by reason of her liberal reputation Ralph Lauren Black Watch Polo
Boxer said Ohio congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones "who I absolutely would follow to the end of the earth, I have so much respect for her integrity" had impressed her by recounting Ohio voters' ballot problems. "I couldn't turn my back on her.
Boxer told the Oakland Tribune on Thursday she just keeps on keepin' on.
And considering California's electorate was 43 percent Democratic, 35 percent Republican and 18 percent unaffiliated, it seems not just Democrats thought Boxer belongs in the Senate.
Boxer, 64, won her third term in November by defeating Republican former Secretary of State and Assemblyman Bill Jones. She won 58 percent to 38 percent, which was her widest victory margin ever and twice her 1998 margin despite having been labeled "vulnerable" by some GOP pundits.
Feinstein agreed: "They elected us to do our best to represent the state. And that's what each of us has done in our own way.".

Earlier in January, Boxer challenged the veracity of Ohio's electoral college votes not to argue the presidential election's outcome, she said, but to provide public debate on voting irregularities. Other senators joined her in the debate, but the Senate ultimately voted 74 1 to accept Ohio's results, with Boxer the lone dissenter.
Her tumultuous month played out as Reid, D Nev., opened a "Senate Democratic Communications Center" on the Capitol's third floor a rapid response war room through which the 44 Senate Democrats can offer a coordinated message on "the values and principles for which Democrats stand," according to a news release. That office didn't respond to an e mail and a phone call seeking comment for this article.
probably wouldn't have delved so deep into Rice's record. "But this was my job. I had to do it, so I started doing it."
harshest critic during the hearings "(Y)our loyalty to the mission you were given, to sell this war, overwhelmed your respect for the truth," she charged on Jan. 18, leading Rice to ask that the hearing proceed "without impugning my credibility or my integrity."
"As you and I both know, this is just one more of the many battles we'll be having as we fight for our nation's future," she wrote. "(I)t will certainly continue over the Gonzalez nomination and on many other looming issues. We're going to need to keep working together to make our voices heard and build a better America."
Always among the Senate's most liberal voices, Boxer is being praised by progressives as a new Paul Wellstone, a go to gal who can be relied upon to loudly assert the left's stance on key issues. Republicans deride her as a shrill, flaky flinger of ad hominem attacks.
Boxer noted Thursday that while Rice "took great umbrage" at the questioning, "she didn't answer the question. It's the oldest debating trick in the book."
Boxer insists she can speak her conscience while remaining a good team player. "We've all agreed there are 10 bills that have been introduced by Harry that totally bring our caucus together," she said, citing new legislation on prescription drugs, education funding, supporting troops and military families, and so on. But her ability to break to the pack's left when she feels it necessary "is the strength of our party," she said.
Boxer clearly feels she's representing a significant liberal constituency. In a posting Thursday to "The Daily Kos," a popular liberal blog operated by Berkeley's Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, Boxer thanked the blogosphere for backing her through Rice's confirmation hearings. She noted more than 94,000 people across the nation signed her petition demanding truth from Rice. "You Ralph Lauren Navy Dress Shirt helped to get our message out to millions of Americans I couldn't have done it without you.
